Miss K and I were in the area setting some caches and we stopped here for a break. I knew it was a cematary but I was a little surprised to find it contained Common Wealth War Graves. I know there was an ordanance depot here but there was never any fighting that took place here and there were also no airfeilds in the immediate area. Until very recent times (including the Faulklands Conflict) it was normal practice to bury fallen soldiers where (or at least in the area) that they fell.
Common Wealth War Graves are governed by some fairly strict rules. A couple of these refer to the size of the grave site and number of soldiers in it but others including the couple below refer to individual graves and are designed to make all men equal....
The first is that all grave stones will be the same, regardless of location in the world, rank, name, regiment or anything else that could make it stand out from the rest.
The second is that when entering a Common Weath War Cematary the grave stones face away from you so they are all identical.
The third is there is no sepparation between ranks, regiments, nationalities or anything else. in this cematary there is a Colonel next to a Gunner and soldiers from several different regiments.
Another interesting fact is that all the headstones are made here in blighty, and taken around the world to where they are needed, this ensures they are all the same.
The cache is not in the cematary but if you enter from the gate closest to the cache you will spot the white war graves, they are spread out but all identical
