Geocache Description:

A dog's usefulness as a companion and ability to follow specifed routines are demonstrated in Obedience trials. The objective is to judge and reward dogs that have been trained to behave in the home, in public place, and in the presence of other dogs at all times and under all conditions. Obedience training is key to branching out into any other dog training, and is found in the best tracking dogs, agility competitors and rally dogs.

In 1936, the American Kennel Club (AKC) held the first officially licensed Obedience trial. That year, there were 18 trials held with about 200 entries. A perfect score in any levels of obedience would be a 200, unlike many other competitions. In 2015, 130,894 entries competed in AKC Obedience Trials. There are three levels of obedience competition, Novice, Open and Utility, each with their own sets of titles. The highest obedience honor a dog can receive is the Obedience Trial Champion title, also called the OTCH. In 2015, only 88 OTCH titles were earned.  You will need to know certain information from this cache description to complete the Wherigo, so don't just download the cartridge and go blindly...that would not be showing a good level of obedience.

We thought that this was a great place for the Wherigo, as it is just down the street from the Toledo Kennel Club. During this Wherigo, you will experience what it is like to be Teddy during an obedience trial, but on a much bigger course. Teddy will be your handler, and Sasha will be your judge. You will look crazy to anyone watching you, as you walk back and forth. Don't stop by a tree and lift your leg, there are public restrooms very close by. You will have to complete each stage correctly in order to be led (not by leash) to the final location. Barking is optional. Please be obedient to park rules during this trial.

This Wherigo cartridge will take 10 minutes to an hour to complete, depending on your level of obedience. It was tested by 5 different people, and those were the low and high times. Teddy & Sasha sure do know how to plan a course...have fun!

The cartridge will also test the accuracy of your gps unit. Each stage is set to go off only within 1 meter of the correct coordinates. We had 1 run of the 5 that found 1 spot bad, but the other 4 runs were perfect.

***Sidenote*** There is a lot of construction going on in Holland right now, but there are three ways to get to this park. You can enter from Clarion and park in the playground lot or in one of the spots along the side of the street. You can also park at the lodge OR the library which are off McCord, but you can't get there directly from Airport Highway.
