Geocache Description:

Hrvatski:

The cave

English

As water drains through the cracks in the surface of the rock, it dissolves the limestone rock.

This in turn widened underground fissures to create channels. The creation of the lower lakes canyon and the expansions of the underground fissures under a doline situated at the edge of the canyon led to instability and caving in of the base of the sinkhole, wich in fact was the floor of the cave. This openend acces to a hidden area and the passage towards today's Kaluderovac  lake.

Vertical passage is passable connecting side channels and halls. Two rooms open to passing, are very simple, usually with no or very little cave decorations, while in the halls of the longest side channel developed mainly bulbous forms.

Šupljara the underground cave habitat with specific environmental factors. The temperature of the cave is constant, about 10.5 ° C and the air is fully saturated with moisture. Due to the unfavorable conditions, Šupljara inhabiting specially adapted cave fauna. Although we can not boast a large space, Šupljara not only the rich cave fauna, but are just out of some kind first discovered and described scientifically! June 22, 1895 curator of Museum of Natural History in Vienna, Rudolf Sturany here collected a copy falsescorpions, which the Viennese expert on the group arachnid Max Beier in 1928 described it as a new kind of Neobisium speluncarium. This relatively large pseudoscorpion endemic to the wider area of the National Park. One of the smallest troglobites is only 1 mm large snail Zospeum isselianum who crawl on the damp speleothems and feed on dead organic matter from the cave sediments. Millipede represented cave taxon of the genus Brachydesmus and of pseudoscorpions in Šupljara is determined and small meuselov pseudoscorpion (Chthonius Subterraneus Meuse), Croatian endemic species described from Velebit. With this troglobionts, in Šupljara find and troglophiles, species that only occasionally stay in the cave (cave Trčak Laemostenus cavicola common cave konjic Troglophilus cavicola, butterfly Triphosa dubitata ...).
