Geocache Description:

This series has been put together for you to follow the trail of the Bootleggers “Rum Runners” in the Crowsnest Pass.

Sentinel – Train Robbery

On August 2, 1920 a Canadian Pacific Railway  train after passing a whistle stop near this location (Sentinel) was held up by three Russian émigrés Alex Auloff, George Arkoff, and Tom Bassoff.. It has been suggested that the bandits reason for holding up the train was that they thought Emilio Picariello, the infamous bootlegger, was on board with a large roll of cash. One story is that Picariello hid his cash between the seats. The bandits fled with little loot other than the conductor’s watch. The resulting manhunt for the thieves resulted in a shootout at the Bellevue Cafe three days later resulting in the death of one of the robbers and three policeman.
