Historians stipulate that it was Leonardo Da Vinci’s fascination with flight that inspired him to innovate the anemometer, an instrument for measuring the speed of wind. His hope was that, eventually, the device could be used to give people insight into the direction of the wind before attempting flight.
While da Vinci did not actually invent the device, he did make variations on the existing designed originated by Leon Batista in 1450 (Da Vinci’s design was probably made between 1483 and 1486) so that it was easier to measure wind force.
Next to his sketches of the anemometer, Da Vinci made the following notes: "For measuring distance traversed per hour with the force of the wind. Here a clock for showing time is required."
Da Vinci’s anemometer has an arched frame with a rectangular piece of wood hanging in the center by a hinge. When the wind blows, it raises the piece of wood inside the arched frame. Printed on the frame would be a scale. By noting the highest point that the wood reached on the scale, a person could measure the force of the wind.

Les historiens stipulent que ce fut la fascination de Leonardo Da Vinci avec le vol qui l'a incité à innover l'anémomètre, un instrument de mesure de la vitesse du vent. Son espoir était que, par la suite, le dispositif pourrait être utilisé pour donner aux gens un aperçu de la direction du vent avant de tenter un vol.
Alors que Da Vinci n'a pas réellement inventé l'appareil, il a fait des variations sur l'existant conçu à l'origine par Leon Batista en 1450 (la conception de Da Vinci a probablement été faite entre 1483 et 1486), de sorte qu'il était plus facile de mesurer la force du vent.
À côté de ses croquis de l'anémomètre, Da Vinci a fait les remarques suivantes: «Pour mesurer la distance parcourue par heure avec la force du vent Voici une horloge pour montrer le temps nécessaire.".
L'anémomètre de Da Vinci a un cadre arqué avec une pièce rectangulaire de pendaison de bois dans le centre par une charnière. Quand le vent souffle, il soulève le morceau de bois à l'intérieur du cadre arqué. Une échelle était imprimé sur le châssis. En notant le point le plus élevé que le bois a atteint sur l'échelle, une personne pourrait mesurer la force du vent.
