The endless sweep of marshes and low scrub forest you see before you had been the seasonal hunting ground to nomadic indigenous people for the many thousand years. But when the Vikings arrived around the year 1000 the site had been unused for a few hundred years. The Viking occupation spanned no more than a few decades but it was some time before the indigenous presence appears once again in the archaeological record. It has been speculated that the slight warming trend during this period may have changed the animal migration and with that the routes of the hunters that relied on them.
