Geocache Description:

I was disappointed to learn that there was not a cache near the location of the Gunness farm, so I decided to rectify that.  If you look at a satellite view of the property, you can still make out what many believe is the foundation of the farm house about 260' into the property.

The cache is located within the right-of-way of McClung Road.  Do not venture past the "No Tresspassing" sign.

Most folks from La Porte know the legend of Belle Gunness.  She is widely regarded as America's first serial kililer.  Between 1900 and 1908, she killed between 25 and 40 people including her husband, children, and several suiters and their children.  Her primary motive appears to be to collect insurance policies taken against these lives.  Incredibly, she managed to get away with these acts by burning her house down and disappearing.  There was speculation that she perished in the fire, but these have been proven false.  To this day, nobody has come forward with any reliable information about Belle's life after 1908.

If you'd like to learn more, the La Porte County Historical Society south of town on Indiana Avenue has a magnificent exhibit.
