Geocache Description:

NOTE: The cache is not located on any of the buildings. There is no need to cross the fence to find the cache.

This cache is located off of Highway 92 about five miles south of the town of Crawford. There is ample room to pull off the highway near the cache site and there isn’t too much traffic normally. However, use caution, as always, when near the highway. Some imagination at the site required: what remains doesn’t look like much but the Maher (pronounced may-er) Post Office was once the hub of the area. Here is a brief history:

In 1884 Caleb Maher applied for a post office to be in the area. The first post office was run out of his home. Each subsequent post master hosted the post office until 1918 when Paul Kruemling took over the position and opened a larger store in conjunction with the post office. That became the official post office until it closed in the 1960’s. The area not having sufficient residents to warrant a post office anymore. The store and post office had a telephone with long distance calling available. All of the homes in the area had local service only.

The original store was once located farther south down the highway. It then moved to the building at the cache site and served as the Maher Post Office and store throughout the mid 1980’s. My father-in-law (a lifelong resident of the area) has recounted stories of stopping to buy lunch stuff on the way up to Crystal Creek to go fishing. In addition to small grocery items, the store also had gasoline available.

Again, please respect the area and do not disturb anything. There is no need to go near the buildings to find the cache.

Happy Hunting!
