Geocache Description:

Cache is located in beautiful Hungry Mother State Park and parking fees are $7.00. Cache is placed with permission of Hungry Mother State Park and the park is generally open dawn to dusk, but hours may vary by seasons.

Hungry Mother State Park was built between the years 1933-42 by the CCC (Civilian Conservation Corps).  The CCC was a part of Franklin D. Roosevelt’s New Deal.  It provided manual labor to young men between the ages of 18-25 during the Great Depression. The unskilled labor jobs were related to conservation and development of natural reserves in rural lands owned by the federal, state, and local governments.

Maximum enrollment for the CCC was 300,000 in the US.  You could work for as many as two years. In 9 years 3 million young men participated in the CCC which provided them with shelter, clothing, food and a small wage of $30 (a about $547 in 2015) a month. ($25 of which would be sent home to their families)  Benefits included physical condition, heightened morale AND increased employability.

During the time of the CCC they planted nearly 3 billion trees to help reforest America, constructed more than 800 parks nationwide and upgraded most state parks, updated fire fighting methods, and built service buildings, trails, and roadways in remote areas.

By 1942, with World War ll and the draft in operation, need for work declined and Congress voted to close the CCC program.

As you hike along the Lake Trail you will see information about the tools used by the CCC. Imagine doing the work today with these tools.

Cache is located along the Lake Trail and you are looking for an Altoid Tin.
