Geocache Description:

St Helens, Brant Broughton

ST HELEN, BRANT BROUGHTON

St Helen, Brant Broughton is a Grade I listed building having achieved its' listing status on 23 August 1967.

The church has elements from the 11th, 12th, 14th and 16th Centuries all surviving in it. A partial rebuild took place in 1812 before an extensive restoration was carried out, using local Ancaster stone, between 1874-1876 by the architect George Frederick Bodley, under supervision from the incumbent Rector at the time, Canon Frederick Heathcote Sutton. The building is unashamedly Gothic, built to the style at the time.

The earliest surviving part of the church are the west windows dating from 1290, although most of the church is from the 14th Century.

The bells were repaired and refurbished in 1881 by John Taylor of Loughborough.

The wrought ironwork, gates, railings, candlesticks and candelabra were made by the village blacksmith, Mr F Coldron.

The spire stands at 198ft high and can be seen from miles around, easily visible to thousands of passing motorists on the A17.

Lots of exquisite stone carving can be seen all around the building which is well worth a look.

St Helens joins with the parishes of St Michaels, Stragglethorpe and All Saints', Beckingham today to share a vicar.
