Geocache Description:

Faderen forlod Martin og hans to yngre søskende.

eng: The sculpture is the first real full body sculpture in Sønderborg by a former citizen. It is made possible thanks to the Art Fund President A. P. Hansen, who in connection with his 80th birthday asked guests to donate money for the sculpture. Martin was scavenger and known in the streets of children and old, who rejoiced when he with a small train whistle announced its arrival around town. He died in 1976 - poor but respected for his wisdom and kindness. Martin Frederik Christian Jørgensen was born in Silkeborg in 1884 and died in Sønderborg in 1976. Martin's mother died when Martin was barely five years. Father left Martin and his two younger siblings. Where they were of is unknown, Martin himself came on poorhouse. As a young man, he trained glazier. In 1943 he moved to Sønderborg, and here he was the rest of his life - and he became a well-known figure in the street when he went around as scavenger, blew into his little train whistle, so people could hear he was coming, and collected everything that could be converted into money. Martin was both respected and, especially of children, for his kindness and great knowledge.
