Vern & Coila 2 Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

DoctoreE: Like most things, this one has come to an end. My apologies to all who have logged DNFs. I'm stepping back from caching, so will be winnowing my caches, maintaining only a select number. This one didn't make the cut. Happy Caching!

Geocache Description:

Vern & Coila Park

This is a revival of a cache I had previously placed here.  The original cache was a multi-cache, and with all the tree cover, I had a terrible time getting good GPS coordinates for each step.  As a result, I'm converting this to a traditional cache that, hopefully, shouldn’t be too hard to find.

The park is a memorial to Vern & Coila Titterington.  They started a restaurant up the hill where two newer houses now stand.  The restaurant was a popular place to gather and enjoy a wonderful meal at a great price.  They also hosted many local bands, giving quite a few an opportunity to grow in popularity and even gain a national following.  The restaurant wound down and was purchased by another individual, but it never seemed to do well without Coila and family at the helm.

Of note here is a placque indicating the name of the park, and when it was dedicated.  There was a gazebo to the right as you read the placque, but it has since been torn down.  A lonely picnic table now stands on the concrete platform.  Time marches on.

The following is from Coila's obituary in 1989.

Coila Titterington

Services for Coila M. Titterington, 81, West Okoboji, were 1:30 p.m. Saturday, March 25, 1989, at the Union Memorial Church, Milford. Rev. Leonard Root officiated. Gerry Sternberg was organist and Marvin Anderson, Jack Jones, Curt Jass and Rev. John Petersen sang 'This Is My Father's World," and "Precious Lord." Rev. John Petersen also sang "The Lord's Prayer." Pall bearers were Steve Titterington, Dan Whitney, Tim Titterington, Steve Jackson, Mike Thu and Greg Brown.

Mrs. Titterington died Wednesday, March 22 at the Milford Nursing Center.

She was born Aug. 19, 1907 at Milford to Daniel and Effie (Ulrich) Jeppeson.  She graduated from Milford Public School. She married Vern Titterington July 1,1925 at Milford. She spent her entire life in the Arnolds Park and West Okoboji areas and owned and operated the Vern & Coila's Supper Club. She was a member of the Methodist faith.

Vern and Coila Titterington opened their first grocery store in 1938, selling pan-fried chicken and home-made pies. As the business grew, they built at the present location in 1946. Following the unexpected death of Vern in 1948 Mrs. Titterington, with her family's help, operated the new business. She suffered a stroke in December 1978, but maintained an active interest in the business.

Survivors include a son, Howard and his wife Roseana, Milford; one daughter, Marcia and her husband Daryl Whitney, Milford; seven grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews and many friends.

Hope you have a good time visiting this area.  Those who are familiar with the area, may well enjoy the memories that I've hopefully evoked.

Cheers!
