Nato a Milano intorno al 1598, Bonaventura Cavalieri è stato un matematico italiano. Entrato in giovane età nell’ordine dei Gesuati, prosegue i suoi studi universitari a Pisa dove entra in contatto anche con Galileo Galilei, il quale aiutò poi il giovane ad ottenere la cattedra di matematica all’università di Bologna. La fama di Cavalieri è dovuta principalmente al metodo degli indivisibili usato per determinare aree e volumi, un passo fondamentale verso l’elaborazione del calcolo infinitesimale, ma che ricevette tuttavia le critiche dei contemporanei. Inoltre, è proprio in quanto riferita al suo nome che l’assonometria cavaliera si chiama così: questa permette infatti di rappresentare oggetti a tre dimensioni tramite l’utilizzo di tre assi aventi origine comune. Tra continui malanni, Cavalieri trascorse i suoi ultimi anni a Bologna dove si spense il 30 novembre 1647. In seguito, a lui venne anche dedicato un cratere lunare, il cratere Cavalieri.

Born in Milan around 1598, Bonaventura Cavalieri was an Italian mathematician. At a young age he became a member of the Jesuates order and then continued his studies at the university of Pisa where he also met Galileo Galilei who later helped the young man in getting the chair of maths at the university of Bologna. Cavalieri’s reputation is mainly due to the method of indivisibles used to determine surface areas and volumes, an important step towards the development of calculus which was nonetheless met with criticism by his contemporaries. Moreover, it’s precisely because of his name that in Italian the axonometric projection is called ‘assonometria cavaliera’: this type of projection allows you in fact to draw tri-dimensional objects by using three axes with a common origin. During recurrent illnesses Cavalieri spent his last years in Bologna where he passed away on 30th November 1647. The lunar crater Cavalerius was later dedicated to him.
