Geocache Description:

Welcome to Tyn-y-Groes.

Tyn-y-Groes is built around a crossroads where the main road from Conwy, descending southwards into the Conwy Valley, intersects a route to the Tal-y-Cafn bridge. In Welsh the village’s name (‘House on the Cross’) derives from the house which once stood where the cache is hidden. The white building on the adjacent corner used to be a blacksmiths while the Red Lion pub (currently closed) served as a staging inn for coaches crossing the Afon Conwy, complete with stables for the horses. Next to the pub is an obelisk war memorial commemorating 18 men of the Parish of Caerhun killed in World Wars I and II.

Just down the road at Caerhun itself is St Mary’s Church, which has particular historical significance as the location of the Roman fort Canovium. Meanwhile if you fancy a walk there are a number of suggested routes on the board by the Red Lion. From quiet streamside paths to woods and open country, the area round Tyn-y-Groes and its neighbouring communities boasts unsurpassable views and an abundance of wildlife and flora.

Please park considerately if stopping for a drive-by and be sure to replace the cache so that it’s hidden. Thanks for visiting!
