The M2G project was completed August 2012... It allows water to be transferred out of the Murrumbidgee River from the Angle Crossing Pump Station to Googong Dam, this also allows the region to access and store water from Tantangara Dam and the Snowy Mountains Scheme. The pipeline discharges here into Burra creek after completing the journey along the pipeline. If you drive along the scenic Williamsdale Road you will see purple markers and pump valves marking the pipeline.
From here it flows another 13km via Burra creek (and under London Bridge) into the Googong Reservoir. One of the four mini hydro stations in the region is also nearby, this is used to recoup some of the energy cost of pumping the water (about 20%).
The levels in Googong Dam have to go below about 80% (plus other factors) before we are likely to see it in use...maybe some lucky Geocacher will witness this facility in operation! The system is capable of pumping a massive 100 megalitres of water per day.
As a bonus, this location is close to the flight path of Canberra Airport, so you can do a bit of plane spotting as you explore the area.
