This site is of the historic Fort Dauphin and has a museum and various outbuildings brought in to help with interpretation of local history. There is a blacksmith shop, a trading post, school building, a church, a farm residence, a hunters cabin and seasonally a TP is set up. Various re-enactments are held throughout the year for different events and occasions. The site also houses a archaeological research and storage facility.
The City of Dauphin has for it’s “brand” a stylized sunburst and is called the City of Sunshine. When I found the smiling sun stamp, it seemed to fit as the appropriate stamp for this cache.
FOR GEOCACHERS: the area sports several hydro lines and has tall trees that might influence your GPS unit. Walk carefully, footing is treacherous and try to avoid leaving “cacher trails” in and out.
FOR MAILBOX FANS: the cache is located just beyond the palisade walls of Fort Dauphin, located on the eastern side of Dauphin Manitoba beside the Vermillion River bridge on Jackson Avenue. To locate the mailbox, start outside the NE corner post, face north and take 8 paces; turn E and take 11 more; turn S and take 6; turn west and take your last 3 paces and you should see the box. Be careful of your footing as the area is storage for used posts.
