The Stevens State Park Mountain Trail (SSPMT) cache is located within Stephens State Park. This 805 acre park contains many loop trails throughout the park. Named for Marsena P. and Augustus W. Stephens that donated 228 acres in 1937 along the Musconetcong river, for recreational purposes.

The history goes back much further, as indicated by an old limestone kiln near the park office. Stephens State Park encompasses the remnants of a historical Morris Canal that was used to ship iron and coal across the state. When railroads were developed, the canal couldn’t compete and was abandoned.

Less than one mile upstream from Stephens State Park, Saxton Falls contains the remains of one of the Morris Canal's 28 locks with a section of the old canal's towpath. This area was acquired when the Morris Canal was abandoned in 1922.
