Geocache Description:

This cache IS at the posted coordinates!!!

We have all felt those awkward times...like when they say the name of a movie during the movie. Or when you lock up your bike and forget the key.

Well, since we are talking about locks, now is probably a good time to tell you that I accidentally locked the key to the lock. It was a total accident, I swear, but if you want to sign the log on this cache you are going to have to become an amateur locksmith. The good news is that I will tell you exactly what to do. The bad news is that it doesn't make it much easier.

What you will find: At the posted coordinates you will find the geocache with a locked container inside. On the lock is the key. You would have a difficult time getting a copy of the key professionally, but an amateur copy? Hopefully

What you will need to do: Your job will be to make your own key that will open the lock. I will even give you instructions on how to do it.

Materials

  • 1 dry erase marker
  • Scotch Tape
  • Aluminum can lid (be carefully of sharp edges)
  • Scissors/tin snips (Something that you can accurately cut metal with)

Process:

  1. When you find the lock and key, find the side of the key with the groove.
  2. Use the dry erase marker to color the part of the key that goes into the lock.
  3. Press the scotch tape onto the dry erase ink. Remove.
  4. You should now have a perfect outline of the key. Stick it to the can lid.
  5. Carefully and accurately cut out the key in the metal. There is a gazebo nearby to work at if you wish.
  6. Once cut, insert into the lock and gently wiggle your key in a counterclockwise direction. DO NOT TWIST TOO HARD. It will wreck your key.
  7. If the lock opens, sign your name!

Notes:

  1. I have actually done this for the lock you will be working with, so I know it is possible.
  2. If your name is not on the log book, you may not claim a find.
  3. In the spirit of fun, I ask that you do not physically share your key with others unless they are with you. I know I can't police this, but part of the difficulty and fun here is MAKING a key that works. Feel free to post pictures of your key, however.
