Geocache Description:

The cave in Manndalen where Norwegian resistance fighter Jan Baalsrud was hidden during WW2 on his flight to Sweden.

Jan Baalsrud was a Norwegian resistance fighter during WW2. He fought during the invasion of Germany and fled to Sweden afterwards. From there he managed to get to England.

In 1943 he was on a dangerous mission to destroy a German air control tower at Bardufoss and recruit for the Norwegian resistance. Unfortunately they contacted a Norwegian with the same name as a trusted contact and were betrayed. The next day a German boat attacked their boat, it sunk, and he and others had to swim ashore through the cold water. On shore he killed a Gestapo officer but managed to hide and stay alive for 2 months.

His deteriorating physical condition (he suffered from frostbite and snow blindness) forced him to put his trust in Norwegian patriots. First he was hidden in a small hut in Revdal. From there he was pulled on a stretcher by men from Furuflaten, led by Marius Grønvold, over the mountains to this hole/cave deep into the Manndalen valley (very near the rock formation that gave this valley its name).

He was meant to lie here for 1 day but it became almost a week (on his stretcher, in a sleeping bag that wasn't waterproof and with only 1 day's worth of food). At first a sudden German patrol and afterwards a snowstorm made it impossible to start looking for him and when the men from Manndalen finally were able to go look for him it turned out impossible to find him because of the immense amount of new snow. After he was found again, and still alive, the men from Manndalen pulled him on his stretcher towards the border. Because of even more bad weather and fatigue they had to abandon this goal and had to hide him again in a new hole they built for him. In this new hole he had more room to manouvre and cut off 9 of his toes to stop the gangrene from spreading. This action saved his feet!

Below you can see some of the men from Manndalen who helped Jan Baalsrud. Among them my grandfather.

After spending 3 weeks in this new hole (where he was provisioned every 3 or 4 days by the men from Manndalen) they transported him to the border of Finland where Sami took over bringing him to neutral Sweden with help of reindeer. In Sweden he was hospitalized for some months before he managed to get back to England where he trained other Norwegian patriots. After he managed to walk again he was sent back to Norway where he remained active as an agent until the end of the war.

After his death on 30 December 1988 his final wish was to be buried in Manndalen. His ashes are buried in the same grave as Aslak Aslaksen Fossvoll, one of the men who helped him escape to Sweden.

The hike to Baalsrudhulen is about 5.3 km. On the way there you will pass a grill hut (Grillhytta) and a very nice hut called Muilhytta/Skaidihytta. The path is very well marked. You used to take the path on the right side of the river but nowadays people take the path on the left side. Note that the path on the right side is no longer maintained. Make sure to follow the signs. It will lead you to very sturdy bridges to cross the rivers at certain points.

I used Wikipedia, the book "Ni Liv" (1955) and what family members told me as sources.
