DEN «YDERST FARLIGE» ØYGARDSKLEIVI
Vegen som i dag ligg like over Borgundstunnelen vart bygd i åra 1841-1843, som ei omlegging av den stupbratte Kongevegen som gjekk over Øygardskleivi.
Kleivi hadde fungert greitt som kløvveg, men vart ei utfordring for veginspektør Iwer Moss då han i 1793, på vegner av generalvegmester Hammer, skulle utbetre strekninga og gjere ho farbar for hest og kjerre. Moss hadde med seg både soldatar og bønder på pliktarbeid og gjorde ein god jobb, men vegen vart likevel omtala som «yderst farlig».
Vel 50 år seinare vart det bestemt at vegen skulle leggjast på utsida av fjellet, på høge murar. Arbeidet vart lyst ut på lisitasjon (anbod), og fanejunker A. O. Tønjum frå Lærdal fekk tilslaget. Eit godt stykke ut i arbeidet møtte arbeidslaget på uventa hindringar. Fjellet var nemleg fullt av sprekker, og det var uråd å byggje ein solid veg utan å minere seg gjennom fjellet. Men minering var dyrt, og diskusjonen gjekk mellom heradstyret og vegstyresmakta, skulle ein finne andre løysningar? I så fall måtte alt som var opparbeidd av den nye vegen «caseres», og ikkje lite pengar ville gå i vasken. Saka enda med at amtet kom med ei større tilleggsyting for å få fjellet minert bort. Truleg var dette den største bortmineringa av fjell som hadde skjedd langs vegen fram til den tid.

Då den Bergenske Kongeveg vart bygd på slutten av 1700-talet, fekk ein for fyrste gong køyreveg mellom Aust- og Vestlandet. I dag er den gamle Kongevegen eitt av dei finaste veghistoriske kulturminna vi har. Den 10 mil lange vandreruta Kongevegen over Filefjell tek deg gjennom nokre av dei vakraste landskapa i Noreg. Frå tronge og dramatiske fjordlandskap inst i Sognefjorden, via høgfjellet på Filefjell, og ned i innlandsbygdene i Valdres. Ei reise mellom landsdelane - med den historiske Kongevegen som den raude tråden undervegs. Der vegen er borte nyttar ein andre trasear, slik at det blir ein samanhengande turveg frå Lærdalsøyri til Vang. Syklistar har alternative ruter utanom dei mest sårbare delane av Kongevegen.
THE “MOST DANGEROUS” ØYGARDSKLEIVI
Just above the Borgundstunnelen tunnel, there is a road that was built during the period 1841–1843 as an alternative to the steep Kongevegen running across Øygardskleivi.
Kleivi had worked fine as a pack-horse track, but was a challenge for Road Inspector Iwer Moss when he in 1793, on behalf of Director-General Hammer, was to improve the stretch and make it suitable for horse and cart. Moss, who made use of both soldiers and farmers duty-bound to work on the project, had done a good job, but the road was still described as “most dangerous”.
Some 50 years later, it was decided that the road should be built along the mountain side, on high foundation walls. Tenders were invited, and Officer A. O. Tønjum was awarded the contract. Well into the project, the work team was faced with some unexpected obstacles. The mountain was full of cracks, and it was impossible to build a reliable road without blasting through the rock. This, however, was expensive, and sparked a discussion between the local municipality and the road authorities. Could other solutions be found? If not, the sections completed thus far would have to be “scrapped”, and lots of money would have been wasted. In the end, county officials agreed to increase the funding in order to remove the obstacle. This was probably the largest blasting operation undertaken along the road at the time.

Bergenske Kongeveg, built at the end of the 1700s, was the first proper road between eastern and western Norway. Today, the old Kongevegen is one of our most beautiful cultural heritage routes. The 100 km Kongevegen across Filefjell walk leads through some of Norway's most spectacular scenery. From the narrow, dramatic fjord landscape innermost in the Sognefjord, via the high mountains at Filefjell, and down to the inland villages in Valdres.
