Ye Olde Ramsey Mill Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

goldygopher75: I went to go and check on my cache after a slew of DNFs, as I wasn't sure if it had survived the winter. Turn out, it didn't, and neither was the spot it was in, which had mysteriously filled in with sediment. So, with my good spot gone, I have to archive this one. Don't fret! There will be a new cache here in the near future...

Geocache Description:

This is a very challenging cache that provides a hard hunt, a scenic view, and a little history of the surrounding area. There is no need to vandalize or in anyway harm the mill ruins, but you can take some side trails through the mill. Also, please respect park hours (6 AM - 10 PM). Muggles and signal bounces will be relavant, so that pumps up the difficulty. If you can, plase CITO while down there. There's always a lot of trash down there. $1 FTF award. Good Luck and Have Fun!

Ramsey Mill

Ramsey Mill was built in a co-ownership between Dr. Thomas Foster and former Minnesota Territorial governor Alexander Ramsey. A spot was chosen on the lower Vermillion Falls, where the river has a head of 19 feet, and a width of 50 feet. Construction started in December 1855, and on October 31, 1857, the 2 1/2 story mill was complete, and named in honor of Ramsey. An addition was built to include a cooper (barrel) shop and storage facility. Even after Ramsey sold his share in 1877, the name of the mill was kept. On December 22, 1894, the mill reached its maximum output, at 125 barrels per day. But, it wouldn't last. After the last load of grain was brought in by F.T. Taylor at 6:00 PM the same day, the mill closed for the night. One hour later, flames were reported coming from two sides of the mill. The fire department arrived too little, too late. The Ramsey Mill was in ruins. Arson was highly suspected, but could never be proven. The mill was never rebuilt, and has stood in it's current state for the past 120 years. A park was built in 1925 to help preserve the mill and the surrounding area. On July 15, 1998, Ramsey Mill and Old Mill Park were added to the National Register of Historic Places.

Congrats to Mars_Rover, 10PinkTARDIS, Holy Strollers and agate mickey on the Co-FTF!!! Luck was on your side, no doubt! EDIT : I forgot to mention this before, but PLEASE DON'T POST ANY SPOILER PICTURES AND/OR LOGS!!! Shame on me for not saying his before, but I want to make this cache as hard earned and as evil as possible. If any spoilers are posted, I will immediately delete them. The find still counts, but just write a new, spoiler free log. Also, I will allow any pictures of the surrounding area and of you with the log or container. But please don't post any pictures of the hiding spot, or the cache in the hiding spot. Thank You and Happy Caching!!!!
