Geocache Description:

Just before (or after if going the other way) the junction of PR #269 and PR #490 there is a cairn on the east side of PR #269 dedicated to the early explorers of Northern Manitoba. These explores and traders with their native guides needed to shorten a canoe route and came up with an overland trail called a portage. This portage was used in the 18th and 19th centuries connecting Lake Manitoba to Lake Winnipegosis.

The traditional canoe route used the Waterhen River system and meant that travelling in one direction forced you to go against the current. This portage short cut was called “The Carrying Place” by the early natives, later the French traders called it “The Grand Portage” in 1760’s, then the North West Traders called it “The Plain Portage” in the 1800’s and finally a railway survey crew in 1813-14 called it “Meadow Portage” and the name has stuck for the local community to this day. The actual portage location is a little further north from the cairn and closer to the community’s administrative centre, rec centre, fire hall, and Highways maintenance centre. Further information on the area can be read on the cairn plaque and associated signs dedicated in 2001.

Cache is located just off site for security and is large enough for tradables and small Trackables if desired. Cell phone service may be intermittent.
