Geocache Description:

Adjacent to Government Dock at end of 30th Side Road. This is a Marine Historic Site.

Big Bay Point has lots of history dating back to early 1800s with the first settler on record as Francis Hewson. Previously the Huron Nation controlled most of the area around Lake Simcoe before they were displaced by the Iroquois and later the Ojibway but none of these original peoples appeared to have settled along this part of the lake. The initial settlers attempted to farm the area but this was mostly unsuccessful and eventually one of the "farms" was converted to a hotel and stop-over for excursion boats plying Lake Simcoe. The area soon became an attraction for cottagers and in the early 20th century the "Point" became a thriving Summer community.

Roads from Barrie up the West side of the lake were very "primitive" at this point and the "Toronto Cottagers" preferred to arrive by boats which ran daily from Barrie or the South end of the lake. The Government Dock close to this cache was one of the prime docking points. One such boat, after which this cache is named, was the Otonabee. At the end of the Fall 1914, the boat was moored ready for the Winter and nearly sank as the caretaker had unofficially left supervising the vessel to go duck hunting for a couple of weeks. The hull's caulking dropped out of some seams and the boat sank to the bottom alongside the dock. The boat was re-floated but 2 years later, during the end of the Summer Holiday Season, during the middle of the night it burst into flames and burned to the waterline. The boat went to its watery grave and is a great exploration spot for recreational divers which you might see launching off the dock both during the Summer and through holes cut in the ice over the Winter. Alas this was the Otonabee's last stand.

This small cache has logbook but no pencil. Good luck.
