Cameron's Brook has a long history in the area for some questionable activities. In The late 1800's so the story goes, 2 brothers headed into the woods over a difference of opinion with the law. This may have arisen in the Molega Mines area. As they were hiding out, they discovered an outcrop of Quartz with gold in it. They had the gold assayed and started a mine. This mine led to a gold rush in the Whiteburne area. There was reportedly 2500 ounces of gold removed from the ground each year during the Whiteburne gold rush.To get people to the area a ferry ran on Ponhook Lake, running from Greenfield to Cameron's Landing. This landing was across the road from the present park and saw many with dreams of riches debark the ferry and nearly as many with broken dreams embark for the trip back to Greenfield.
In 1924 another questionable character came to the area. His name was Lou Keyte and he claimed to be a literary genius, writer and agent who launched numerous careers. He purchased a hunting lodge and had it renovated. The property encompassed the land behind the park all the way to the lake. He held many parties and brought people in from Liverpool, Halifax, New York and Chicago..Money was no object and his parties were the talk of the area. It was rumored that even Al Capone had made an appearance or two. As time went on people started to question his story and history and later it was discovered that Lou Keyte was in fact Leo Koretz, a famous and much sought after Chicago swindler. In his swindles in the early 1920's Koretz had taken more than $30 Million Dollars. a huge fortune roughly equivalent to $400 Million Dollars in today's currency. This was considered to be the largest Ponzi scheme perpetrated until Bernie Madoff swindled so many in the Early 2000's. Koretz/Keyte was captured and held in jail in Halifax and some say he committed suicide by eating chocolate(he was diabetic) to avoid prison in the United States.
The house stood for many years and was gradually torn apart by people looking for his hidden money, most of which has never been accounted for.
Sadly this cache is the only treasure you will probably find here at this time.
