The ruins of the peat store at Old Gang are a remarkable sight and well worth the detour off the Coast to Coast path to see them. The site is a Scheduled Monument so take great care not to disturb it, the geocache is NOT hidden among the building’s remains but nearby, with kind permission of the local land managers. To reach the peat store you need to follow a grassy path uphill from the main route up the valley. We've supplied the path's start co-ordinates for you.
To find out more information about this and other lead mining sites in the National Park download our free leadmining app packed full of site specific information, walks, audiotrails and visitor information. Look for ‘Yorkshire Dales Lead Mining’ in the App Store or Google Play. There’s also lots of information on our archaeology website www.outofoblivion.org.uk
The leadmine geocaches and the app were generously funded by Historic England. Looking after these extensive industrial remains is not easy and we are grateful to Historic England for helping to fund so much of the conservation work carried out over the past 20 years.
