History:

Did you Know . . .

  • Martin Van Buren was the 8th president of the United States, from 1837 to 1841, but lived here from 1839 until his death in 1862. He may have created the two party political system that the United States still has today, but for the 1848 election, with the urging of his son, John, he joined the Free Soil Party that stood in opposition to the main parties and was in support of abolishing slavery.
  • Martin Van Buren was also an innovator; he was always looking for the newest and best technology. This is evident in the indoor plumbing installed at Lindenwald, his home. This desire to try new things was also illustrated in the farming techniques he practiced. Many were new for the time period, such as rotating crops and using fertilizer to enrich the soil.
