Geocache Description:

This Earthcache is designed for the young and young at heart geo hunters. It is an interactive earthcache. (visual, touch)

At the posted coordinates you will see several giant stone penguins, near the beach.

Limestone is a sedimentary rock consisting of calcium carbonate. Most limestone is composed of skeletal fragments of marine organisms such as coral, forams and molluscs. The stone forms at the bottom of an ocean or shallow sea. Partial consolidation of the shell particles and grains can form a porous stone. Some limestone do not consist of grains at all, and is formed by chemical precipitation of calcium carbonate producing a smooth structure. Fine granular limestone can be mistake for sandstones. Calcium carbonate is white. Contamination with various elements will change the colour of the stone.

These penguins are carved from one of the natural local types of stone. (Slate, Bluestone, Dolomite, Limestone or Granite).

To log this earthcache you will have to answer the following questions.
Question 1. Which of the local stones are the penguins carved out of? Is the penguin stone hard or soft stone?
Question 2. Can you see any fossils or shells in the penguin stone? Check carefully they might be quite small.
Question 3. How are the different colours on the penguins formed? Is it iron oxide or carbon?
