Micro container near a G.A.R. memorial in a very large cemetery. As always-no caching outside of daylight hours per Michigan state law.
Founded in 1866 in Decatur IL after the American Civil War the Grand Army of the Republic (G.A.R.) was a fraternal organization of honorably discharged veterans of the Union army. By 1890 it would become a major force in American politics helping to elect 5 of its members to the US Presidency. The organization was active in promoting and founding veterans homes, relief work and soldiers pension legislation. The last Encampment (gathering) of the organization was held in 1949 and the last member died in 1956. The organization was succeeded by Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War which is still active today. If you look around this memorial you'll find headstones of veterans of that era as well as those from America's foreign wars. There are also number of headstones for unknown soldiers from the Civil War here. Elsewhere in this cemetery you can find mausoleums and graves of some of the prominent Ludington families as well as sites from the Lumber Heritage Trail giving some history of these families. Look for the white posts with a QR code and a phone number on it.
