St Matthias' Church is one of the few buildings remaining in the once thriving copper mining town of Currawang.
In the period 1866 to 1872, Currawang was the largest copper producer in New South Wales. Mining continued until 1882 and resumed briefly in 1897 & 1907. The main mining area was down the hill, west of the church, where there is currently a pond. By 1875 (the year the church opened), there were between 350 and 400 residents in the area, only slightly less than Tarago!
Most traces of the community have been erased by time (or by mine rehabilitation) and only a few tumble down houses, a chimney on Hennessey's Hill and the church remain.
Please replace the cache as found (covered). Thanks
