The original dam at Saxton Falls was built in the river in 1830, creating the mile-long lake and diverted water from the Musconetcong River into the Morris Canal. Boats entered the lake at Lock 4 West, a mile upstream from here, and were towed by mules in the "slackwater" of the lake to this lock, Lock 5W, at Saxton Falls. From here, the Morris Canal flowed toward Hackettstown.
The natural fall of water at this site provided water power for a sawmill that was once located here. This sawmill probably provided timbers for the construction of the canal.
Across the river you can see railroad tracks. This was the Delaware, Lackawana & Western Railroad's old main line to Pennsylvania. This railroad is still in use today by the Morristown and Montclair-Boonton Line's of New Jersey Transit.
