Geocache Description:

Little Angels - Tommy Drayton

This is part of a series of geocaches that have been placed to remember the young lives that were lost to tragic circumstances and lost in history.  Keeping their memories alive.

This is a story about a young boy helping on the family farm.  Although Edward Drayton was almost 16, he was the man of the house after his father William died 9 years prior.  Edward was known to his family as Tommy (as that was his second name).

It was a Monday just before lunch on the 11th April 1927. Tommy and his brother Leslie aged 14 were unloading some hay at the stables using the horse and dray.  Tommy had placed a nose bag over the horses head, this would steady the horse.  After the dray was unloaded Tommy went to lead the horse away, but she took fright and bolted, still with the dray attached.  The dray overturned which knocked him hard onto the ground.

Ada, Tommy’s mother heard the commotion from the house, and went rushing out to see what happened only to find her son lying motionless on the ground.  Help was sent for immediately, but it was too late.  Tommy died from a broken neck.

Ada, buried her son in the Winchelsea Cemetery in the same grave where her husband is buried.  And immediately put the farm of 200 acres on the market.  It was sold 5 months later and the family moved to Larpent, near Colac.

This is a very personal one to me (Mrs H_3) as Tommy was my great uncle.
