THIS GEOCACHE WAS FORMERLY KNOWN AS - Sawdust Pile 550 -- it is the same cache with a name change due to new information gained!
This cache is easily accessible from FS Rd 550 -- probably even in a low clearance car!
We don't know all the facts yet on the sawmill that was at this spot at one time, but will add info if we get it!
Update - August 2022 -- All facts I've gathered over the years point to that this was the Turner Sawmill. Although there was a lot of timber cutting in the area, there were only a few actual sawmills which would result in a sawdust pile of this calibur! Nearby was also the Turner Sawmill School which was in the Hahns Peak school district. The school was constructed in 1937 by sawmill crews in order to get the school closer to the students. Prior to this time, the Pine Grove school was the closest school - but it was located near Smith Creek about four miles north of Columbine on what is now County Road 129. The Turner Sawmill school was built from 1x8s or 1x10s, rough-cut, unplaned, sawed boards which according to one former students left "lots of splinters". The Turner School probably operated until the 1940s when the sawmill closed. The last record of a school in the Hahns Peak District was in 1945 when the district was disolved and annexed by the Clark district.
The cache is in a small rubbermaid/glad type container with a camouflaged top. BYOP -- container has log and several small tradeables, but I didn't have a small enough pencil for the lid to close :-)
