On February 27, 2016, Pokemon celebrated its 20th birthday.
Players were given the choice of 151 different characters, along with the ability to customize each of those specific characters in different ways. Players were encouraged to play the game with friends, which allowed you to not only compete in battles against friends, but also to trade with them.
Many of the creatures, while not the most viable in combat situations, learned skills that were useful in the game outside of fighting, making otherwise "worthless" characters incredibly valuable.
To celebrate this pop culture phenomenon, I want to take you back to 1996 when the first generation was released.
Aspiring trainers were capturing their little pocket monsters by hurtling ‘capturing balls’ at them. Balls that could be obtained at special stores. Once sufficient street cred and experience was obtained, the little monsters would evolve into more powerful creatures through the use of special gemstones. Once the trainer had sufficient creatures they were able to go into battle for trainer supremacy.
Defeating the strongest character Mewtwo would give the player the most street cred.
Here are some of the ‘rules’ of the game:
There are three ‘Ball Stores’ (see the map below). When you enter a store you receive between 5 and 10 new balls. The store now won't yield any new balls for 3 minutes.
There is one large playing field where the little monsters will spawn. They spawn at random intervals and you will hear their cry when they are near (On mobile devices only). You need to be on the move though. If you stand still, no new monsters will spawn and all you hear is a sonar scanning.
When a new monster announces itself, you are asked if you want to throw a ball at them in order to capture them. Throwing a ball may result in capturing the monster earning you 10 points. But they may also break free (but you can throw a new ball) or they run away.
You need to capture 5 Pikachus, 5 Charmanders and 5 Squirtles (50 points for each).
When you have captured 5 monsters of a kind, you will receive a stone. Use this stone in your inventory to evolve your monster into a stronger one.
After you evolve all three monsters you are strong enough to go to battle. The MewTwoBattle will open up for you and the final battle awaits.
You will also be given a password. Just in case the game crashes at this point you can go directly to the MewTwoBattle.
Once at the battle, you will see a boxing glove in your inventory. Using the glove will attack Mewtwo. However in the meantime Mewtwo will attack you too. You will be notified each time this happens. You need to get Mewtwo’s health to zero before your own health expires. Only then will you be given the final coordinates of the cache.
The recommended sequence is to start at ‘secret park’ at the given coordinates and walk the playing field in a counter clock wise direction.
Enjoy your walk in one of Adelaide’s most picturesque areas, but please be mindful of your environment when playing. There is no need to cross any roads as there are paths underneath the bridges, except for BallStore1.
