Ever since I placed the cache Almost a Goner at base of the giant bur oak on the north side of Lexington, I have wanted to place a cache to highlight this magnificent bur oak that overlooks Harrodsburg Rd across from Military Pike. Threats to this oak by development may have finally been put to rest, allowing for the public to appreciate it hopefully for many years to come.

Known locally as "the most fought-over tree in Lexington", the Old Schoolhouse Oak has the plan and commitment in place to preserve this aging giant. Efforts to save the tree derailed residential development in 2008, In 2014, a more comprehensive plan was put forward and accepted to develop the property while addressing concerns about the tree. Removal of previous driveway, providing a wide berth around tree, clearing the surrounding underbrush, installing a lightning rod system, and providing a 6 inch depth of mulch over the 3/4 acre area surrounding the tree were some of the steps taken ensure the tree's health.
Initially thought to be over 300 years old, this tree is now estimated to be closer to 500 years in age, although its exact age cannot be determined since the tree is hollow. This tree was already long in the tooth when Daniel Boone set foot in the area. Hopefully, it can continue to stand tall for many years to come.
