Geocache Description:

Every time I looked at a map, I wondered why there weren't more hides along here. I resolved to correct that. This is definitely outside the cemetery fence, but can easily be accessed from inside, as well.

Please be respectful and do not hunt for this when mourners are present inside the fence.

  1. "The Gates of Paradise" is a song by David Byrne from his album Feelings
    So beware of good intentions,
        And the passion in their eyes;
    For none of them can open,
        The Gates of Paradise
  2. The Gates of Paradise is the name of a rather extraordinary set of bronze doors created in the year 1401 by the artist Lorenzo Ghiberti at the entry to the baptistry of San Giovanni in Florence (see background image on this page).
  3. The Gates of Paradise is a collection of verse (with etchings) by poet and artist William Blake.
  4. The Gates of Paradise is a novel in Polish by Jerzy Andrzejewski. The novel is comprised of only two sentences; the second sentence is four words long, and the first sentence is 39,996 words long.
  5. "The Gates of Paradise" is a relatively straightforward traditional urban geocache.

It is also said that the Gates of Paradise are one means to enter the realm of the afterlife. That may or may not be true, but I can attest that these gates are one means to enter the lovely memorial garden that is Saint Mary's Cemetery.

The gates are now padlocked but the gate can easily be approached from inside or outside the cemetery, and the cache can definitely be reached from inside or outside, as well. The cemetery maintenance manager informed me that there have been a few complaints about activity in the cemetery after closing, so management decided to lock the gate. The manager assured me that they are aware of geocaching activity on their perimeter (outside the fence), and that the game had no bearing on the decision to lock the gates.
