Friends of the Pentlands has planted more than 4000 trees since their foundation in 2003. In 2013 it was decided by them to establish a small arboretum of 21 trees in each of the 5 Local Authority areas of the Pentlands to promote the understanding and appreciation of our native species. During 2013 arboreta were established at Swanston and West Linton and the following year three more at Silverburn, Carnwath and Harperrig.
This is a historic and scenic area and there are many caches around so the cache is a bit away from the actual Arboretum, Walk up the path through Swanston Village, keep walking towards the hills and the Arboretum lies on the right hand side 200 m from the kissing gate.
The Friends of the Pentlands are a voluntary group who undertake conservation and biodiversity work throughout the Pentland Range, the trees and surrounding areas are cared for and maintained by the group.
Each of the 5 locations now has a cache at or nearby serving to highlight the great work of the group and bring geocachers to these beautiful areas.
I intend to eventually create a bonus cache so each cache has a letter and number within. Please keep a note of them as they will soon assist you to find a bonus cache if the series proves successful.
