Carcassonne, named after the walled city in the south of France, is a tile laying game in which players form a landscape between them scoring points for cities, roads, cloisters and more as they are completed. The game introduced the iconic "meeple" to the world - the person-shaped wooden tokens now prolific among modern board games. Carcassonne has won many awards including the 2001 Spiel Des Jahres, or the German "game of the year" - widely recognised as the most prestigious award in gaming.
