Fosilni sledovi, imenovani tudi ihnofosili so geološki zapisi biološke aktivnosti. Fosilne sledove je težko povezati s točno določenim organizmom, saj lahko enake fosilne sledove ustvarijo različne vrste organizmov. Povezava določenega ihnofosila s točno določenim organizmom je težka tudi za to, ker lahko isti organizmi ustvarjajo različne sledove. Nam pa dajejo fosilni sledovi zanesljive podatke o konsistentnosti sedimentna v času odlaganja in energijskem nivoju sedimentacijskega okolja.
Fosilni sledovi nam nudijo posredni dokaz o življenju v preteklosti in informacije o delovanju oziroma vedenju organizmov v času njihove življenjske dobe. Fosilne sledove so ustvarili organizmi z njihovimi vsakodnevnimi funkcijami kot so: plazenje, počivanje, iskanje hrane in hranjenje. Med ihnofosile med drugim spadajo tudi stopinje prvih kopenskih vretenčarjev (tetrapodov), cevke (poti) črvov in bivališča školjk ter členonožcev.
Ena izmed delitev fosilnih sledov je na endogene in eksogene. Eksogeni fosilni sledovi so tisti, ki so bili ustvarjeni na površini sedimentov (npr. sledovi plazenja), endogeni fosilni sledovi pa so tisti, ki so bili ustvarjeni v notranjosti sedimenta (npr. sledovi bivanja).

A trace fossil, also called an ichnofossil is a geological record of biological activity.
Trace fossils are generally difficult or impossible to assign to a specific maker. Only in very rare occasions are the makers found in association with their tracks. Because identical fossils can be created by a range of different organisms, trace fossils can only reliably inform us of two things: the consistency of the sediment at the time of its deposition, and the energy level of the depositional environment.
Trace fossils provide us with indirect evidence of life in the past and rovide us with a record of the activity of an organism during its lifetime. Trace fossils are formed by organisms performing the functions of their everyday life, such as walking, crawling, burrowing, boring, or feeding. Tetrapod footprints, worm trails and the burrows made by clams and arthropods are all trace fossils.
Most trace fossils are known from marine deposits. Essentially, there are two types of traces, either exogenic ones, which are made on the surface of the sediment (such as tracks) or endogenic ones, which are made within the layers of sediment (such as burrows).

Eine Spur Fossil, auch ein ichnofossil ist eine geologische Aufzeichnung der biologischen Aktivität genannt.
Spurenfossilien sind in der Regel schwer oder gar nicht zu einem bestimmten Hersteller zuordnen. Nur in sehr seltenen Fällen sind die Hersteller in Verbindung mit ihren Spuren gefunden. Da identische Fossilien kann durch eine Reihe verschiedener Organismen erzeugt werden, Spurenfossilien können nur zuverlässig uns zwei Dinge informieren: die Konsistenz des Sediments zum Zeitpunkt ihrer Ablagerung und das Energieniveau der Ablagerungsraum.
Spurenfossilien liefern uns mit indirekter Beweis für das Leben in der Vergangenheit und rovide uns mit einer Aufzeichnung der Aktivität eines Organismus während seiner Lebensdauer.
