THIS IS AN EARTH CACHE THERE IS NO PHYSICAL CONTAINER
Throughout all rivers there are many different features to be spotted. There are waterfalls, gorges, v-shaped valleys and meanders just to name a few! Each of these river features are formed by a variety of processes which occur within the river.
Deposition- Deposition is the process where a river drops it's load of sediment. This normally occurs when a river lacks energy and is travelling slowly. Because it had so little energy it can't carry the sediment anymore so it drops it's load.
Erosion- Erosion is the process where the river bank or the sediment are worn down by one of the following sub-processes:
Hydraulic Action- When the force of the water wears down the river bank and gets into faults to cause the bank to erode.
Abrasion- When sediment being carried by the river hits the river bank and causes it to wear away.
Attrition- When sediment pieces being carried by the river bash against each other to cause them to become smaller, smoother and rounder.
Solution- When chemicals in the river cause erosion in the river bank.
Transportation- Transportaction is the process where sediment is moved along the river. The different types of transport are as follows.
Traction- Where large boulders are pushed along the river bed by the force of the water.
Saltation- Where pebble sized particles are bounced along the river bed by the force of the water.
Suspension- Where small particles like silt or clay are carried along by the water.
Solution- Where soluble materials dissolve in the water and are carried along.
How is a meander formed?
The current or flow of water is faster on the outside bend of the river because the channel is deeper. This means that there is less friction to slow the water and it has more energy. Therefore, more erosion takes place on the outside bend forming a river cliff. The current is slower on the inside bend of the river where it is shallower and has less energy because there is more friction to slow the water. So eroded material is deposited on the inside of the bend, forming a river beach.
About the cache:
This earth cache is situated near a public footpath through the floodplains of Teigngrace. When it has been particularlying rainy the area does as it should and floods. Please chose your time wisely to visit this cache and be cautious.
Logging requirements-
Please message me the answers to the following questions via the geocaching message center! And if you find it helpful I have left some diagrams in the pictures section of this cache.
1. What process creates the river beaches on a meander?
2. Which of the following would have a bigger deposition of sediment: A- A bigger slower river B- A smaller faster river
3. What type of transportation is occurring by the river beach and why?
4. Are the pieces of sediment on the river beach similar sizes or varied sizes?
5. Is the river flowing faster on the inside or outside bend?
Optional tasks-
1. Take a picture of you or your GPS near the meanders.
PLEASE NO SPOILER PHOTOS THAT GIVE AWAY AN ANSWER
Good luck and Happy Caching!
