Il Santuario si trova a Rivotorto di Assisi, ai piedi del Monte Subasio. Eretto in stile neo-gotico nel luogo dove esisteva una precedente chiesa distrutta da un terremoto nel 1854, il Santuario custodisce al suo interno il Sacro Tugurio, una semplice costruzione che ricorda il luogo dove San Francesco visse per qualche tempo con i primi dodici frati, quelli con i quali nel 1209 si recò a Roma per chiedere al Papa Innocenzo III l’approvazione del suo “proposito di vita”. Si trattava di un modestissimo riparo che viene definito da molti come “la culla della Fraternità francescana”. Solo verso il 1210-1211 Francesco e i suoi compagni, con il tempo cresciuti di numero, lo abbandonarono per trasferirsi presso la chiesa della Porziuncola ricevuta in uso dai Benedettini del Monte Subasio. La Chiesa della Porziuncola si trova adesso all'interno della Chiesa di Santa Maria degli Angeli.
Il Santuario nel 2000 è stato riconosciuto dall’UNESCO Patrimonio dell’Umanità.
The Sanctuary is located in Rivotorto of Assisi, at the foot of Mount Subasio. It is built in neo-Gothic style in a place where there once was an earlier church destroyed by an earthquake in 1854. In the inside of the sanctuary the Sacred Hovel is preserved: it is a simple building that commemorates the place where San Francesco lived for some time with the first twelve friars, those with whom in 1209 he went to Rome to ask the Pope Innocent III the approval of his "life purpose". It was a modest shelter that is defined by many as "the cradle of the Franciscan Fraternity". Only in the years between 1210-1211 Francis and his companions, grown in number with time, left this place and moved to the church of the Portiuncula received by the Benedictines of Mount Subasio. The Church of the Portiuncula is now located inside the Church of Santa Maria degli Angeli.
In 2000 the Sanctuary was recognized as World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
