This is the fourth cache in the Bailieborough Walking Tour series.
Please be gentle removing the lid of this cache.
Contains only a log so you will need your own pen.
Come back up Adelaide road and taking your first right you will enjoy a walk up hill.
(There is a playpark on your left on the way if want to stop for a detour with geokids)
At the top of the hill you can see the ruins of the Old Church of Ireland. This is the area of the second town settlement. (The first was out at the Castle Lake). There is no exact record of when this church was built but the records of vicars of the parish begin in the reign of James I, 1619
Within its burial ground are many of the earliest inhabitants of the town. You can find the graves of the James Family, ancestors of the renowned Henry and William James; Gustavus Tuite Dalton - the very first editor of the Anglo Celt (our county's newspaper) and mass famine graves.
The cache is near the rear of the current Church of Ireland. It occupies a commanding position at the lower end of the main street. The church was built between 1833 and 1835. In the Church there is a memorial window to Lord and Lady Lisgar. In the graveyard their remains are contained in the burial vault of the Young family. Lord Lisgar died in Bailieborough in 1876 age 69.
