Per trovare il cache devi guardarti intorno e camminare alla ricerca delle tracce di un santo. Trovata la strada, guarda sulla destra e cerca la vecchia porta arrugginita-
L'Abbazia
L'imponente complesso dell'abbazia di Santa Maria del Monte sorge sul colle Spaziano. L'interno è a una navata con quattro cappelle per lato, che conservano opere d'arte di grande prestigio. In alto, sui tre lati, corre il fregio di Gerolamo Longhi che contiene quattordici scene della vita della Vergine.
Nella prima cappella di destra troviamo una pregevole Annunciazione di Bartolomeo Coda, dipinto nel 1543, e un Capo di san Giovanni in tondo; nella seconda cappella è presente un San Mauro risana gli infermi di Francesco Mancini, dipinto nel 1704, e una Deposizione in tondo di Girolamo Marchesi, del XVI secolo.
La terza cappella di destra presenta l'opera pittorica di maggior pregio contenuta nella basilica: si tratta del La presentazione di Gesù Bambino al tempio e la purificazione della Vergine ad opera del maestro bolognese Francesco Raibolini detto il "Francia", decorato nel 1515; nella lunetta vi è una Deposizione di Girolamo Marchesi (XVI secolo).
Nel 1986 papa Giovanni Paolo II, durante la visita in Romagna, ha soggiornato nell'abbazia; per ricordare il grandioso evento è stato anche dipinto un ex voto.
Molto bella la cupola, opera di Giuseppe Milani, affrescata tra il 1773 e il 1774.
La collezione di Ex Voto
Vale la pena di visitare l'importante collezione di ex voto conservata nell'abbazia.
Sono raccolti circa 700 tavolette di grande valore, dipinte a partire dal 1400, che raffigurano i miracoli con i quali la Vergine del Monte esprimeva la sua protezione a Cesena ed ai cesenati.
Nel territorio è antichissima la tradizione di dipingere, o far dipingere da mani più esperte, tavolette votive per grazia ricevuta alla Madonna del Monte.
La tradizione continua ancora oggi ed accanto a tavolette antichissime ve ne sono alcune molto recenti. Se guardate bene, ne troverete anche una che raffigura il noto ciclista Marco Pantani.
Sono brevi scene di vita che incontrano la storia (un ex voto, ad esempio, raffigura un crollo del vecchio teatro cittadino avvenuto nel 1820, un altro la scampata fucilazione di un uomo al termine della seconda guerra mondiale) oppure, molto più spesso, i piccoli drammi di vita familiare (la malattia di un uomo del Quattrocento, una disgrazia nei campi e uno scampato naufragio nel Cinquecento, un incidente tra una Vespa e un'automobile assai più recente). Veri e propri sguardi su un passato più o meno remoto.

The Abbey
The imposing complex of the Abbey of Santa Maria del Monte rises on the Spaziano hill. The interior has a nave with four chapels on each side, which preserve works of art of great prestige. At the top, on the three sides, runs the frieze of Gerolamo Longhi which contains fourteen scenes from the life of the Virgin.
In the first chapel on the right we find a valuable Annunciation by Bartolomeo Coda, painted in 1543, and a head of San Giovanni in the round; in the second chapel there is a San Mauro heals the sick by Francesco Mancini, painted in 1704, and a Deposition in the round by Girolamo Marchesi, from the 16th century.
The third chapel on the right presents the most valuable pictorial work contained in the basilica: it is the Presentation of the Child Jesus at the temple and the purification of the Virgin by the Bolognese master Francesco Raibolini known as "France", decorated in 1515; in the lunette there is a Deposition by Girolamo Marchesi (XVI century).
In 1986 Pope John Paul II, during his visit to Romagna, stayed in the abbey; to commemorate the great event, a votive painting was also painted.
The dome by Giuseppe Milani, frescoed between 1773 and 1774, is really beautiful.
The Ex Voto collection
It is worth visiting the important collection of votive paintings (Ex Voto) preserved in the abbey.
There are about 700 tablets, dating from the 1400s, depicting the miracles with which the Virgin of the Mount expressed her protection to Cesena and its citizens.
Here it is very ancient the tradition of painting, or having it painted by more expert hands, votive tablets by grace received from the Madonna del Monte.
The tradition continues today and next to ancient tablets there are some very recent ones. If you look closely, you will also find one that depicts the well-known cyclist Marco Pantani.
They are short life scenes that meet history (a former votive, for example, depicts a collapse of the old city theater occurred in 1820, another the escaped shooting of a man at the end of the Second World War) or, much more often, the small dramas of family life (the illness of a man of the fifteenth century, a misfortune in the fields and an escaped shipwreck in the sixteenth century, an accident between a Vespa and a much more recent car). Real insight looks on a more or less remote past.
