A little to the west of here is a farm where twins Ray and Kay were celebrating their tenth birthday. Their Uncle Charlie had bought the recently retired famous race-tying racehorses Mable and Gable. When he visited, he told Ray and Kay to look for their present in the barn. The kids ran over excitedly, and each went directly to one of the horses. They loved their new gifts, and each spent the rest of the day feeding and brushing and walking their respective new best friends.

Later as the kids finally had to leave the horses for the night, Ray asked, “How will we be able to tell the two horses apart so we keep the same ones tomorrow?” Kay suggested, “I’ll trim the tail on my horse shorter so it will be easy to see whose is whose.”

As soon as Ray and Kay were up the next morning, they ran over to the barn, and were shocked as they saw that both horses had identical shorter tails. Not sure which horse was which, the kids each approached the nearest to each of them, and then again lovingly spent the day taking care of their chosen friend.

For the second consecutive night, the kids faced the same problem. Ray decided, “I’ll trim the mane on my horse short so tomorrow we can tell them apart.”

Again Ray and Kay ran to the barn first thing in the morning, and again they were stunned, as the two horses now had the same short mane. Not sure which horse was which, the kids each approached the nearest to each of them, and then again lovingly spent the day taking care of their chosen friend.

As the day drew to a close Ray let out an exasperated, “Now what are we going to do?!”

After a few moments Kay exclaimed, “I know! Mine will be the black one.”
