Geocache Description:

Make sure you bring a long a tape measure and get ready to measure!

The newer volcanics basalt deposit were formed by series of volcanic eruptions from around 400 now extinct volcanoes from Seymour to Portland.  This basalt covers an area of around 15,000km, however, since most of the individual eruptions were relatively small, and the lava was very running, in most places the deposit is less than 50m thick, but they can have traveled a long way, often in river or creek valleys sometimes filling them completely.

All of this happened only 4000 to 5000 years ago!!

When you arrive a the posted coordinates, you will faced with a fairly big embankment of rock.  Please do some research and answer the following questions

  1. There are two large round features in front of you, what are they examples of?
  2. What is the width of one of the features, measured with a tape, not guessed
  3. The right hand end of the embankment is different to the left.  Describe the difference.
  4. Can you think of a reason this feature might have occurred in this location

Please remember to contact me with your answers.
