Liverpool Larrupers
This location is the site of a baseball field on which The Liverpool Larrupers once played.
The Larrupers was a local senior baseball team that started in the 1890’s and played right up until the 1950’s. The players were aged 18 into their 30’s. This team is of importance to Liverpool’s history. Since baseball wasn’t taken as a serious sport, much of the Larrupers history has not been recorded. We do know that a player, ‘a Larruper’ from Milton played for the Boston Red Sox for a couple of years. Another Larruper, Danny Seamone was inducted into Nova Scotia’s Baseball Hall of Fame.
Babe Ruth actually visited and played with or at least threw out a ball or two.
It’s interesting to note, that in the 1920’s there were very poor road systems. It must have been a challenge for teams from Middleton, Shelburne or Yarmouth to get together to play. Most players had a full time job and played when they got off work. There were no lights, so games were played between 5 – 8 pm in the summertime.

It’s worth mentioning, that baseball did indeed become a serious sport in Liverpool. Up until the late 1970’s, most of the banks and stores in town closed at noon so everyone could go to the ball game.
