Le MAH est un musée encyclopédique. Il rassemble des collections archéologiques, d’arts appliqués et des beaux-arts.
Le bâtiment inchangé depuis son inauguration en 1910 doit être rénové et agrandi.
Le 28 février 2016, à la suite d'un référendum, les citoyens de la Ville de Genève refusent à 54,34% des voix un projet financé à parts égales par des fonds privés et publics.
D'autres projets sont actuellement en cours d'étude.
