While the Devon, sometimes called North Devon, to distinguish it from the South Devon breed, is one of the oldest beef breeds in existence today, the American Devon is a new comer to the dairy world. In fact, most consider the North Devon and the American Devon to be the same animal. What happened is this- a disagreement in the Devon Association that led to a split in the ranks. One group wanted to focus on the beef qualities of the animal, while the other sought to preserve the tri-purpose of the beast- milk, beef and oxen. So whether you have a North Devon or the American Devon may more depend on your politics than the animal itself.
