Piazza Leonardo da Vinci è il cuore del quartiere Città Studi, popolata ogni giorno da studenti di ogni età, ospita una delle più prestigiose scuole elementari e le due sedi principali del Politecnico di Milano: questa multi vi porterà a scoprirne le varie parti con una breve passeggiata.

 

Recatevi alle coordinate del listing: vi trovate nella parte più antica di piazza Leonardo da Vinci, che ottenne questo nome solo nel 1927, quando fu accorpata alla restante parte della piazza; precedentemente era intitolata al filosofo Roberto Ardigò. Il lato sud è occupato dalla scuola elementare Leonardo da Vinci, una tra le più note e prestigiose della città, inaugurata nel 1933, che ha ospitato diversi allievi poi diventati personaggi illustri della città (tra cui l’owner di questa cache).  Al centro della piazza è presente una scultura-fontana intitolata “Alla libertà, alla pace, al lavoro”, dello scultore Andrea Cascella, che fu posta qui solo nel 1985, ed è il punto di gioco preferito dei bambini della scuola elementare. Intorno alla fontana sono presenti alcune panchine di pietra di forma rettangolare: quante? Questo numero sarà A.

 

Qui troverete una statua in bronzo di Eugenio Villoresi, ingegnere, noto per aver progettato il canale (che ha poi preso il suo nome) che collega l’Adda con il Ticino. La statua fu posta qui nel dicembre del 1907 ed è stata realizzata da uno scultore il cui nome troverete in una targhetta sul basamento della statua stessa. Le lettere totali del nome e del cognome dello scultore saranno il numero B. Un’altra curiosità: guardando verso sud è possibile notare le cupole e le guglie dell’Istituto Ronzoni, un edificio a cavallo tra stile Liberty e Art Decò risalente al 1927 e attualmente sede di una fondazione dedita alla ricerca farmacologica. Per il suo stile particolare, questo edificio è soprannominato “il Cremlino di piazza Leonardo”.

 

Ora vi trovate nella parte centrale della piazza, risalente alla fine degli anni ‘20 ma rinnovata recentemente (la fine dei lavori è di maggio 2016): i lavori hanno riqualificato le zone verdi e pedonalizzato l’area. Di fronte a voi si trova la sede principale del Politecnico di Milano, che ospita la facoltà di ingegneria. Il Politecnico è la più antica università milanese, fondata nel 1863; inizialmente la sede si trovava in Piazza Cavour, ma nel 1927 fu spostata qui, dove ancora oggi si trova. L’unico ricordo della prima sede è via del Vecchio Politecnico, che parte da piazza Cavour. Nel corso degli anni, al Politecnico hanno studiato e insegnato diversi personaggi  illustri dell’ingegneria mondiale,  che hanno contribuito a renderla una delle università più prestigiose e all'avanguardia a livello internazionale. Alle vostre spalle si trova una piccola area verde, solitamente ritrovo per studenti. Se cercherete questa cache nel periodo delle lauree, sarà facile imbattersi in qualche festa organizzata nel giardinetto oppure proprio sui gradini davanti all'ingresso! Tra la strada e l’area verde, si trovano alcuni cubi di pietra colorati su cui ci si può sedere: il loro numero sarà C.

Leonardo da Vinci square is the main square in the Città Studi district, always crowded with students of different ages, it hosts one of the most important primary school of the city and the two main buildings of Milan Politecnico. This multi cache will bring you to explore the whole square with a short walk.

 

At listed coordinates you will be in the oldest part of Leonardo da Vinci square. It gained this name only in 1927, when it was merged with the remaining parts; before, it was named after philosopher Roberto Ardigò. On the southern side you will find Leonardo da Vinci primary school, one of the most famous and prestigious in the city, built in 1933, where many famous persons in Milan studied when they were young (including the cache owner). In the center, there is a sculpture-fountain named “Alla libertà, alla pace, al lavoro” (To freedom, to peace, to work), by sculptor Andrea Cascella, placed here in 1985, which shortly became the main playing spot for the kids from the primary school. Around the fountain, there are some rectangular benches made of stone. How many? This number is A.

 

Here you will find a bronze statue representing Eugenio Villoresi, an Italian engineer who designed a canal (which was later named after him) to connect Adda river with Ticino River. The statue was placed here in December 1907 and it was made by a sculptor whose name you’ll find on a small plaque on the base of the statue. Count the letters of his name: this will be the number B. Another interesting thing: looking in southern direction it’s possible to see the domes and the peaks of Ronzoni Institute, a building designed in Liberty and Art Decò style in 1927, now venue of a foundation for pharmacological research. Because of its particular style, this building is named “the Cremlin of Leonardo square”.

 

Now you are in the central part of the square, first built in the ‘20s, but recently renovated (works ended in May 2016): renovation works retrained the green areas and made the whole square suitable by pedestrian, forbidding car traffic. In front of you there is Milan Politecnico, specifically the building that hosts engineering department. Politecnico is the oldest Milanese university: it was founded in 1863; at first, it was placed in Cavour square, but the university was moved here in 1927. During the years, many important persons studied and taught at the Politecnico, making it one of the most prestigious and advanced universities in the world. Behind you there is a small green area, where usually students eat and rest. If you come here in the weeks of degrees, you’ll probably found students having a party there or even on the steps in front of the main building! Between the street and the green area there are some colorful stone cubes: the number of them will be C.
