Lieutenant Lt(N) – A junior officer. Holds a commission.
On a smaller warship, a Lieutenant could act as the Executive Officer (XO). Second in command, if you would. The word ‘Lieutenant’ comes from the French language where ‘lieu’ means ‘place’ as in a position and ‘tenant’ meaning holding…’holding a position.’ So, a Lieutenant is some one who holds a superior’s position in their absence. (Just wait till we get to Admiral…and how that word came from the Arabic language).
