Geocache Description:

The HMAS Sydney II memorial is of national significance and is especially sensitive to navy veterans and the families of those lost. We ask that you please respect this site.

Australia’s greatest maritime tragedy took place during WWII on the 19th November 1941 off the coast of WA when the HMAS Sydney II engaged in combat with the German raider, the Kormoran. As a result, both ships were lost, the Sydney sank without trace and with it perished the entire crew of 645. Many of the Kormoran crew survived and were picked up in the ocean off the coast near Carnarvon. This memorial has been built here to ease the legacy of pain felt by the families.
